Hidden deep in Tanzania’s Southwest Circuit, Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the most untouched and rewarding safari destinations in Africa. Found on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale is accessible only by boat, making it a truly exclusive and off-the-beaten-path experience.

Home to 82 species of mammals, 355 bird species, and nine primate species, Mahale is most famous for hosting the world’s largest remaining population of wild chimpanzees. Visitors embark on hikes through the dense forest to observe habituated chimps, a breathtaking and intimate wildlife encounter in their natural habitat. During June to early July, hikes can be more strenuous as the chimps move higher up the mountains.

Beyond chimp trekking, Mahale offers stunning nature experiences, including swimming in waterfalls, hiking through lush forests, sailing on traditional dhows, and kayaking on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. Visiting a local community or school also provides a deeper cultural connection.
