Journey Time: ~1 hour / 40 km
Accommodation: Chanya Lodge or similar

After breakfast, drive to Rongai Gate (2,364 m) on the northern side of Kilimanjaro. Following registration, begin your trek through pine forests and transition into lush heathland. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and diverse plant life. Overnight at Simba Camp (2,671 m).

Distance: ~7 km / 4 miles
Elevation Gain: +307 m
Hiking Time: ~3–4 hours

Today’s trek ascends through moorland as the forest thins and views open up. On a clear day, enjoy panoramic views extending across Kenya’s border. Mawenzi Peak looms ahead as you make your way to Kikelelwa Camp (3,600 m) — one of the prettiest camps on the mountain.

Distance: ~16 km / 10 miles
Elevation Gain: +929 m
Hiking Time: ~6.5–7 hours
Accommodation: Kikelelwa Camp (Tented)

Enjoy a short but steep ascent today. Vegetation thins dramatically as you move into the alpine desert zone. Arrive early at Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315 m), set beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. Ample time today for rest and acclimatization.

Distance: ~3 km / 2 miles
Elevation Gain: +715 m
Hiking Time: ~3.5–4 hours
Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (Tented)

A key acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the altitude. After breakfast, take a short hike up to Mawenzi Ridge (4,389 m) for spectacular views and critical acclimatization time. Return to Mawenzi Tarn Camp for lunch and a relaxed afternoon.

Distance: ~3 km
Elevation Gain: +74 m, then return
Hiking Time: ~2–3 hours
Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (Tented)

Cross the stark saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — a wide expanse of alpine desert. Wildlife is sparse here, but occasionally eland are spotted. Reach Kibo Camp (4,720 m) in the afternoon. Rest early in preparation for your midnight summit attempt.

Distance: ~9 km / 6 miles
Elevation Gain: +405 m
Hiking Time: ~4.5–5 hours
Accommodation: Kibo Camp (Tented)

Your summit day begins at midnight. Climb steadily via Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) and on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) for a sunrise you’ll never forget. After photos and celebrations, descend to Kibo Camp, rest briefly, then continue down to Horombo Camp (3,720 m).

Elevation Gain: +1,192 m ascent, -2,175 m descent
Hiking Time: ~11–13 hours
